We are so glad this week to officially welcome Emeric Lau, our new host of QueerCast into the team! Together with our ever-so-fabulous Ian Lee, they really do make a really chemistry-filled couple!

Again, so many things had been happening over the past weeks. Otto Fong, no-repeal of gay sex law (377A), and the NTU survey that was reported out of context by Singapore’s No. 1 selling print newspaper, The Straits Times.

In case you haven’t read the actual survey paper yet, the survey focuses on public attitudes on gay characters depicted in films, and not real life people like your friends, or gay people within the society. Of course, we did not have enough information when we were recording this episode until we read the official paper that can be found here: http://www.mit.edu/%7Emaiyifan/ntusurvey.pdf

If you do not want to read the entire survey, here’s something easy to take-away. The title of the survey is: “SINGAPOREANS’ ATTITUDES TOWARD LESBIANS AND GAY MEN AND THEIR TOLERANCE OF MEDIA PORTRAYALS OF HOMOSEXUALITY“. Food for thought? Thanks to a certain ST reporter for such fine neutrality and honesty in this report.

Read the paper (not just the title). The study does ask about “real life people” using the Attitudes Towards Lesbians and Gays (ATLG) developed by scholar and gay activist Greg Herek. http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/sexual_prejudice.html

About

Wickedly funny, senseless, yet informative - QueerCast is what you will need to spice up your dull straight-acting days with the colours of the rainbow. The "hopefully" weekly show delivers entertainment, community news and updates, uniquely Singaporean issues, or even the occasional personal jokes and rantings.
